WHAT IS GASTROENTEROLOGY?
Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and the diseases of your gastrointestinal tract and liver.
WHAT IS A GASTROENTEROLOGIST?
A gastroenterologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the stomach, intestines, and associated organs of the digestive system. These organs include the colon, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, gall bladder, pancreas, rectum, anus, and liver. As gastroenterologists, we focus on the physiology of your gastrointestinal organs, digestion, motility of materials within the digestive system, and waste from your body.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE A GASTROENTEROLOGIST?
It is important to schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist if you are experiencing any symptoms relating to your stomach, intestines, or any associated organ of the digestive system or need a colon cancer screening.
Some common symptoms that indicate the need to see a gastroenterologist are heartburn, chest pain after meals, nausea, vomiting, difficulty or pain in swallowing, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, anemia, blood in the stool, black or tarry-colored stools, or loss of weight or appetite.
Colonoscopies are currently recommended for all adults, ages 45-75, as a screening tool for colorectal cancers. To schedule your colonoscopy in our in-house office suite, please call our office.
YOUR FIRST VISIT TO THE GASTROENTEROLOGIST
Welcome to The Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders, serving Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Your office visit usually begins with a conversation about your digestive symptoms and family medical history, followed by a physical.
Sometimes, we need to order follow-up tests to complete the diagnosis. Other times, we may schedule endoscopic procedures where we look inside your body with an endoscope to determine what is causing your symptoms. Using our endoscope, we can take tissue samples, stop bleeding, relieve blockages, and remove tumors. Our goal is to make a diagnosis, find medical treatments, or recommend lifestyle changes that can alleviate your symptoms and promote the best quality of life.
